What do singletrackworld people think about Carrera road bikes from halfords? I've got a very small budget and think this looks good on paper.

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_272625_categoryId_165710_langId_-1?cm_sp=Intelligent_Offer-_-Product_Details_Zone_1-_-Blank&iozone=PDPz1#dtab

Hope this link works.

well it's shite.. go second hand and you should get something decent for 300.

I don't think it's too bad for the money, but if you know what you are doing you'll get much better 2nd hand - just make sure it isn't in need of lots of wear and tear items.

That good! I don't have a clue about road bikes. I've been looking 2nd hand for a while but most things that look good are just out of my reach. May be looking a while

I appreciate it can be hard to get something decent on a small budget but to be honest as above, you're prob best to go second hand and get something better.

The Carrera will be quite heavy due mainly to the steel forks. It has 8-speed shifters which hasn't really been used widely on road bikes for 7-8 years or more. The tyres are to fat, ideally you want 700x23c.

One of the low end Boardmans would be better IMO.

Definitely keep looking - just sold my Allez for £350 and the specs look a bit better than the Carrera.

I got a Fuji with carbon stays, 105 mechs, tiagra shifters, rs20 wheels for about 350 recently. 2nd hand and a bit tatty in a couple of places (shifters/levers and cranks) but rides really well.

You wouldn't go far wrong with something like this.

you reckon? i think you should be able to find carbon forks and sora for 300 if you look properly. (i.e. an allez most likely)

For the money you're definitely best to go 2nd hand

It's a little over what you want to spend, but the kit list is very good

My own roadie is a Cube Peleton (2008), which has a carbon fork & mostly Shimano 105 running gear - I've done over 4000 miles on it & it still runs sweetly (I have taken care of it)

IMHO weight makes more of a difference on a roadie - I recently had a go on my brothers full carbon Planet X (kitted with Dura Ace) & it absolutely flew along 😀
