Hi All, just wondering if anyone is running 2.3mm on the mk3 rims. I know Maxxis recommend the WT tyres and that the 2.3 are a bit narrow but whats real world experience like?
I run 2.3 high roller 2s on the MK3 flows. Absolutely fine - it never have crossed my mind to think they're too narrow!
Not really relevant for this time of year, but I found the Minion SS 2.3 to be too narrow, the cross section's too square and the tyre does't really work because of this....
I'm running 2.35 minions on Flow Mk3's with no problems generally. They ride well, with no noticable issues. In fact the feel great. Predictable cornering and don't squirm at as low as 18psi.
However, i did completely obliterate my rear wheel in Verbier last year. Hit something on the trail with some kind of sharp edge (not sure what as i was hooning it) and the rim and wheel completely shattered. Rim split into two parts (nearly 3) and spokes all failed completely. The tyre was not actually split, but it had distorted enough to be unusable.
Now, it might have nothing to do with the tyre size, but maybe the depth of the tyre when mounted to a wider rim like these, is reduced enough for it have a propensity to hit the rim bed more frequently.
Mk3’s here with a 2.3 Minion on the front, 2.25 Ardent on the back.
No where near gnar enough to hoon, but I find them fine even down to 20psi.
No problems here with 2.35" Maxxis tyres on mine either.
I've got 29 X 2.3 DHF on same width wtb rims and while not terrible, 2.4 wt HR2 & shortly were better, even in 27.5 flavour on my i30 rims
Got a DHf 2.3 and dhr 2.3 to put on, they look ok, guess couple of runs will give me a yay or nay! Can alway pass on and size up if don’t feel comefortable I guess.
