[Closed] Stans Flow - just yellow tape, or rimstrip?

[#1854526]

Just ordered some Pro3 wheels with Flow rims.

I want to run a 2.3 LUST Highroller on the front and a non-UST 2.3 twin ply HR on the back.

Can I get away with only the yellow tape, or do I need a rimstrip as well?

Thanks,

Jon

I heard for the ZTR 355 you can run either but for a reduced risk of burping a rimstrip is advisable - Poss the same for the Flow?

I know that's true for single ply non-ust tyres, but don't know what happens when you use USTs or dual plys that are a lot stiffer.

for UST tyres, they recommend yellow tape & not rim strips

* The ZTR Flow, like our other rims is fully compatible with the yellow tape and valve method for tubeless use. The Flow rim however uses a 25mm wide yellow tape as opposed to the 21mm tape used in the many of the other rims.
* Most riders elect to use the thin 5g yellow spoke tape and no rim strip. All wheelsets built by NoTubes will have the yellow tape and valve installed as standard practice. The tape and valve method creates a lighter wheelset and the rim design will allow you to run extremely low pressures with very little or no burping.

You can do either, technically just yellow tape with USTs and rim strip with converted tubed tyres, but in the real world, if you're patient, you can usually make do with just the tape. Double or triple wrapping with tape can help as well just by making the bead to rim fit slightly closer. I've never had an issue with burpring using converted tyres with yellow tape btw. In any case, if you do decide to use a rim strip, you'll only need it with the non-tubeless tyre, the UST one'll go up easy with just tape ime.

There is a Flow specific rim strip for use with conventional tyres. With UST tyres just use yellow tape.

That's the official line, depending on the tyre, you may get a conventional tyre to work with just the tape.

Jon,

Just be done with it and buy a LUST for the rear....

You'll struggle with the yellow tape only and a non-UST on the rear....

You don't need to use a rim strip if you pack the yellow tape high enough (2 or 3 runs)......but, the faff/burping/cost difference isn't worth it....

You can source 2.35 LUSTs in 42 and 60a.........

Joined the Turner fray btw.....not sure how/why but the 5 Spot rides far better than it should!!

I beg to differ
I've put 4 normal High Rollers on Flows & 355s in the last month - just with 1 wrap of yellow tape
All went straight up & stayed up & have had a good few hard miles put on them since then

Depends on the tyres - some work better than others......single or dual plys are you referring too?

It's just not worth the faff/inconsistency/cost saving......esp when you consider the cost of a rimstrip....yes, it may well work for Jon and great if it does....but, going forward I'd advise buying a LUST tyre......

Depends on how you ride them too of course!! 😆

Howdo Scott...

Just moved onto an Intense funnily enough... (still got the turner though!). Spent too long waiting for the dw-rfx!

I'm planning on using the 2.3 dual ply on the rear simply because I know I'll pinch a 2.3 LUST one within yards of starting the first rocky DH I come across. I have enough trouble doing that on the Soda, let alone the speeds a 7" bike can generate. Should get away with it on the front though. Currently Maxxis claim not to do UST in twinply 2.3s, and I don't want to drag a 2.5 around. A 2.3 twin ply tubelessed up should come out lighter than a single ply + FR tube, which is what I use at the mo, and should be stronger.

So it looks like yellow tape on the front, rimstrip on the rear then.

Jon,

What do you mean you'll pinch a LUST?

You mean flat the rim sidewall or burp the tyre/tear the sidewall?

We've had okay success (Mega/Spain) with the 2.35 LUST DC Rollers......sidewalls have held up....

Think that you're not far off with the weights...

There currently isn't a tubeless 2.35 DPC Roller....but, there is an EXO one on the way.......

How's your backend alignment??

I tried flow+yellow strip and couldn't get a DP 2.35 minion to inflate with a track pump - will get it on the compressor at work soon but hopefully once up it should stay that way indefinitley. Did try with a home made rimstrip but it didn't work either.

UST 2.5 DPs make an awesome rear tyre and I've done a couple of lakes rides on one but they do drag.

Sigma I've not trashed a lust but have ruined a few other ust tyres, normally a tiny hole next to the tyre bead/rim and a corresponding big rip (5-10mm) in the tread section. The EXOs sound interesting.

Get the 25mm tape and you'll be fine. When you install it, put the tyre on with an inner tube, inflate and leave overnight to properly seat the tape (as per the Stans video). I did that with my Bonty tubeless ready and they inflated easily with a track pump - didn't even need to soap the rims.

As per Donk - hit them hard enough and you end up with a hole in the tread and one down by the bead - the latter is a bitch to patch.

I get a lot less flats than when running tubes using LUST tyres, but when I do get one, it usually involves writing off a £30+ tyre. On the other hand it's been very rare indeed that I've flatted a twin ply. Hence the interest.
