I boughts some (v cheap) revs off the forum a while back, only just got round to opening them up and the stanction looks like this:

So I think the coating has rorn off in a couple of areas. There for a second bike so I don't mind that they're a bit shoddy, but don't want to spend any money on them. Has anyone tried anything in an effort to repair such damage? Some kind of clear coat or something?

Any help appreciated, thanks!

Does it leak oil? If not, just ride it and stop worrying I'd say.

Mind you, I'm not known as the most expert of mechanics!!

The reputed repair is nail varnish built up in layers then rubbed down to get a smooth surface. Use very fine wet and dry to rub it down You probably need new seals as well

Does it feel rough to the touch? I've never had great results from the expoy or nail varnish idea but has solved similar with new seals and just rubbing the rough path smooth with 1200 wet and dry then brasso.

It wouldn't actually be leaking the main oil as it were...the oil lost would be the oil that's used to lubricate the seals and thats soaked into the foam rings.

If the area of damage is smooth, personally I'd just strip them down, change the oil in the fork and then grease/lube the the hell out of the seals/foam rings and put them all back together. Shouldn't get any worse but I would up the maintenance schedule to make sure the oil/grease on the seals is clean and fresh.

Used the nail varnish approach a few times with great results,'cept I use a very fine wire wool rather wet'n dry

I did the nail varnish thing with some Pikes - the seals were filthy but I just cleaned them and relubed everything - they seem fine now.
