[Closed] St Andrews

Their Uni. Cycling Club is really good - lots of active members, always loads of stuff happening and plenty of opportunities to get out of St. Andrews, which is good 'cos it gets pretty claustrophobic pretty quick.

My girlfriend went uni in St Andrews. She loved it, good parties down on the beach apparently. (Past the second car park or bins or something, which is technically out side the town = free parties!)

Lovely city, plenty of posh talent, but little to do beyond golf ime. It's also a bit of a trek to any decent mtb riding. Would be ok for road riding though.

There's not plenty to do - it's a village with 2 streets and the train station's 4 miles away (cheers Dr Beeching). The university off-sets this to a decent extent, though. Great base for riding and general outdoors - loads of spots in Fife and then beyond that obviously you're into the real McCoy.

It's quite a polarising place, basically. I think if you visited it on an open day it would be quite clear whether it was a good place for you or not.

I think it's a fantastic part of Scotland with access to some great areas.Very underrated IMO.

Fife as a whole is pretty flat but there are bi-weekly rides to very local trails which are reasonably techie and more than enough if you're into xc! There's lots of opportunities to get out into the highlands as well; the freshers trip goes to Glentress trail centre but there's lots of other trips to the back and beyond to bag some munros and medals throughout the year!
In terms of nightlife- you've pretty much hit the nail on the head but the union and the Lizard have got you covered if you fancy boogying. If you like the outdoors and can make your own fun (invest in fancy dress!) then St Andrews is awesome. If you have any questions let me know!

Such fond memories of flogging a 10-speed with cowhorns and cyclocross knobbies over the Himalayas putting green next to the Old Course (great mogul field) and crashing in the bunkers on the 17th green in the middle of the night :-). Was back in the 70's and probably shouldn't be condoned as suitable behaviour anymore... Maybe bunnyhopping the Swilken Burn would be more De Rigeur these days?

My brother lives there and i was up there visiting him last weekend i think its a nice place to live and the beaches look good for cycling so i would be looking at a fat trye bike for the sand and a road bike for the rest of my cycling.

I went to uni there. Had an absolute ball, house parties FTW!

I also went to St A's in the late 80's.

Had an amazing time. Sure, not a big city but can't remember ever finding myself short of a party to go to or mates to drink with. As there was less 'on tap' to do, I think that people made more of an effort to organise events.

Didn't ride then (should have) but it is a great base for most outdoor pursuits (not just golf).
