Any experiences? Slippage or derailment?

Should I just bite the bullet and get a SS specific ring?

I don't really get this. The ramps etc on a chainring are there to lift the ring on to it, not off it. So on a middle they're there to lift it off the granny as the derailleur move the chain over onto the ramps. They do also have some smaller / lower teeth to assist shifting, but if you have decent chain tension (and no outer ramps to lift the chain off) that shouldn't be an issue either.

That said - a ss specific steel chainring is not expensive and will go on forever.

If you already have one then fit it and use it til it wears out. I always use normal Shimano Deore middle rings for 1x and singlespeed. It has teeth. It makes the chain go. It's fine. If it really bothers you I'd still say use the one you have then replace with a proper SS ring.

I'm doing what munrobiker says and have had no issues with my current middle ring acting as my only ring, with the exception that the chainring / spider bolts constantly come loose.

As above, have gone SS & 1x10 this year on two bikes using 'normal' deore rings

The chain's not fallen off once, but I will change them once they wear out to something more specific.

Re: loose bolts - you have changed them to SS specific ones?

Works fine, don't waste your money on a ss specific ring unless you want some nice bling.

Mork - yes the shallower ones from Charlie the bikemonger. A dab of loctite is probably the cure...

I've had a ramped middle ring plus bashguard (just for trouser leg protection) on my pub bike for the past 3 years, with a BMX chain and no chain tensioner (vertical dropouts). No issues, just do it.
