I have just changed my s/s from a 32/16 to a 34/17 it is still 2:1 gearing but why does it seem to roll along better / easyier???

Mostly psychological probably.
But also in theory you are stretching the chain around the teeth less (bigger diameter) so less of your energy is going into heating up the chain.
However, the amount of difference it makes is surely miniscule, given that chains are pretty efficient in the first place.
Maybe the old chainring and sprocket were worn down and that somehow makes a difference?
