am having no luck removing one off my freewheels, even with a huge spanner on the end i cant even get it to budge, are they always hard to get off???? Any tips?

If poss use White Industries Uno (very accurate fit) tool hold this on to hub with extra long skewer (shimano rear with out spring is usually OK) use big spanner , or if proper tough place in big vice and grab wheel/tyre like like steering wheel and turn - if this does not work you are..... and prob new hub

you need a length of tube that fits over the end of your spanner.

Yep a few feet of scaffold pole or something of that ilk over the end of your spanner and it'll just come off like you're not even trying.

The vice is the only way I have found that works without slipping.

I'd go for the vice option as well, always works and less risk of breaking anything (like your fingers when it all slips!)
