Whats a good gear to start off with? I was thinking maybe 36x16 or maybe a 38?

think it'l depend on where you're ridign and onroad vs offroad ratio

go with what you've got and adjust from there.

38:16's going to be tough on the hills.

Thats what I was kinda of thinking about the 38. I use to ride 34/17 ss mtb around where I live and around Cannock.

if got some chainrings lying around then experiment, i had 42:16 but using 39:18 more recently for races, much better in slow corners imho

Did the last 3 Trailbreak CX sportive things, used a 46x20 gear setup on my Pompy.....right on the edge of usability with a 60/40 road/track mix.

Will try a 44 tooth next time....

i use 42:18 locally but i reckon it's too high for racing. maybe 42:20.

Thanks for the replies, I've found a 36 ring laying around and some DH cranks so i'll slap them on and give it ago with 36x16 and go from their. It just for local stuff mainly and maybe Cannock.

Nice article Stoner funny enough its an On-One Ti i'm converting ๐Ÿ™‚

38x18 is a good place to start, just about enough to go along the flat and get up some hills.

Cant beat a good SS CX bike... or two
