can any tell me if its possible to get just a replacement arm that isnt going to cost that and a leg?

depending on your BB type.. there are some offers around on X0 cranks at the moment.. It works out cheaper buying the whole thing rather than buying the replacement part.
I got a set of X0 GXP cranks recently for £99.. Think it was Rutland or Winstanleys that were doing them

On One are doing X01 and XX1 for cheap too, and XX.
