Is this cassette / Hub combo XD only? I just bought a bike with this on, hoping to use my current 11sp Shimano free hub wheels... but can I?

What do you mean?
If want to fit your own wheels why would it matter about the other ones?

Anything thats starts with XG is always XD only.

Sorry, stupid question. My old / better wheels have an XT M8000 11sp cassette on. They will work fine with the SRAM Mech /Shifter albeit different range in the cassette.
No need for a free hub purchase, phew!
On the plus side I may be able to sell the unwanted wheel & unused XD cassette [i]separately[/i] for more cash. 8)
