[Closed] SRAM X01 11 speed rear mech setup

[#7903353]

I'm new to all this 11 speed stuff. I've just picked up a new bike, but can't seem to get the rear 11-speed setup right. Specifically, on a SRAM X01 mech, the mech won't reliably shift into the top 3 gears (smallest cogs).

If I disconnect the cable and pull by hand then everything seems to be running freely - it's almost as if there isn't enough tension in the return spring in the mech. This happens both on the workstand and when I'm pedalling.

I've followed the SRAM setup instructions wrt high/low limits and B-screw adjustment. I've also purged the pivots on the mech with GT85 in case they were sticking.

What am I missing? Is this just a bad mech I should replace? Or should I just bin the mech & shifter and go to XT 11-speed (I'm a big fan of the dual-release feature). Thoughts?

I can only think of chain length - it's pretty critical with the SRAM rear mechs, but you've probably already sorted that.

It's clearly broken. I'll take it off your hands for £10 posted.

Have you checked that the rollamajog doesnt clash with the cage? Its a common issue if you follow the setup instrictions to the letter.

Did you pick it up from a shop?
Go back there and tell them it doesn't shift properly and get them to fix it and take you through the setup.

Did you set the limit screws after installing the chain?

That's a crucial step IME

Can you go XT without changing the free Hub? I thought that was a no no.

You can if you keep the cassette.
As long as shifter and mech match you can mix and match 11sp offroad groupsets.

Is it brand new then? I think there are some that have issues with the spring becoming weaker and it effecting performance. I've had some nightmares with mine lately but I've just replaced the cassette and things hopefully are getting better. I need to replace the jockey wheels next as they're clearly out of date.

Set limit screws
Chain correct length, with suspension compressed
Set b screw
Make sure the cable is threaded as per instructions
Barrel adjustment all the way off, then plus two clicks
Pull cable tight and lock
Index

Fitted new one a few months ago, simple easy.

Suspect the chain length isn't right

Thanks for the tips folks! It's not new, it's second hand so there's a possibility the mech's dead. Which would be a bit annoying, but not the end of the world!

Had a look last night and the rollamajig isn't clashing with the cage as far as I can see. Having said that - what's with the mad cable routing? My 9 speed stuff is much more direct!!

I believe the chain length is correct, but I'll double check. Having said that, wouldn't chain length just affect the larger cogs (running out of slack)? Why would it affect shifting down the block?

Limit screws, B-screw and cable tension were all set with the chain installed. Mech was set up with the bike at ~30% sag (shock depressurized).

I'll double-check chain length at the weekend and try Pawsy_Bear's method. Fingers crossed 😕

Wrong chain length can lead to the mech fouling itself. Also with the SRAM 1x mechs the rotation of the cage changes the distance between top jockey and cassette more dramatically than other mechs.

I doubt it's enough to cause it to not go into the top 3 gears though (unless you just meant the top 3 were all slightly out.
