I have bought a second hand bike with a SRAM X0 crankset on it. I went to remove it to find that its “self extracting”......well that’s a load of tosh as the internal 8mm allen key bolt that you are supposed to undo that then pushes against the external 16mm cover plate and then self extracts just pushes against the external cover plate with enough force to push it out.
So I now have no way of extracting the crank unless anyone else has a bright idea or knows of a tool that can help.
I assume the PO did not apply grease when putting the cranks together and water has crept in and bonded the cranks together. I would normally try heat but with the crank arms being “plastic” and foam in construction and aluminium conducting heat away very fast I don’t want to do any further damage.
Any ideas??

Nooo dont say that. I had thought maybe some form of bearing puller might do the job but there is not enough material on the back of the crank arm that is not "plastic" or foam.
was just thinking that - i'd just 'carefully' try to cut the non-dive side off - its cream crakered now anyway....
(think i'll double check mine has enough grease on it when i get home...)

Have you tried hitting the non drive side crank outwards after penetrating fluid soak over night?
Take the bolt out and go and do some intervals 😆
