I get the feeling that the hive mind here prefer the KMC but I've been using SRAM PC991 cross step without issue but I'm willing to switch if the KMC is better.

Is it just a "feel" or doesn't anyone have some numbers to put to this?
Cheers.

To be honest there really is the square root of fleck all between any of them.

Don't spend any more that £20 on a chain and replace it every 1000 miles

Gold KMC without hesitation. SL if you can afford it.

I`ve used Shimano,SRAM PC991,PC991 hollow pin and KMC.
KMC are cheaper and last at least as long in my experience.
I really see no need to buy anything more than the KMC X9.
L has slotted links,SL has slotted links and hollow pins.

KMC are nice and easy to open too, Sram can be an absolute pig to get open.

just use a set of pliers to open an sram chain, though make sure you use them at an angle, only contacting one end of each link plate with plier end before pinching. Always found this works in an instant. If you try and pinch the whole link square on so to speak, you may be there for some time!

KMC works fine. I've had some problems opening them, but pliers or the dedicated tool makes that a non-issue. I also get some comfort in knowing that the KMC 10spd master link is made to be opened and closed multiple times as opposed to the Powerlock (not saying it can't be done though).
