Geoff,

Yes it works.

I have TruVativ chainrings off a FireX GXP set on my M770 XT cranks.
No filing or fettling, just plain fit and ride.

The Shimano rings need a little filing to fit the truvative cranks so you shouldn't have a problem. You will have a small gap though.
