SRAM T-type and GX Eagle chainring question

[#13536311]

Okay, trying to keep this simple. What I have is:

eLyte has SRAM T-90 with a 38T chainring and Whyte 155mm cranks

Bike2 has GX Eagle AXS with a 32T chainring and 165mm cranks.

What I want is:

eLyte Eagle GX AXS with a (new) 38T Eagle chainring/same cranks

Bike2 SRAM T-90 with a (new) 32T Transmission chainring/same cranks.

Assumptions I'm making:

-both drivetrains are almost new so adding just a chainring should be fine in terms of wear/meshing

-The T type chaining on the Whyte cranks is a standard 3 bolt or 8 bolt direct mount (it's really not easy to tell)

-I can fit a T type chainring to GX Cranks (chainlines are the same)

I mean how can it be this complicated! But I'm hoping by just buying two new chainrings, I can get this swap done. AI tells me this will work. I don't really believe it, so I've come her for some advice instead.

I think…

eLyte you are fixing the chainring to the motor and it wont be three or eight bolt

Regular bike I think T-Type is all eight bolt and older eagle is three so you need to know what three bolt chainrings are T-type compatible

Thanks. That makes sense. I really couldn't see how the chainring was attached to the motor. I'll have a chat with the bike shop who sold it to me and see if they can recommend something that is GX compatible. Absolute worse case for the other bike I'll have to find a cheap/2nd hand set of T-type cranks.

Option, I dunno, Z is to just swap the wheels (this is where I came in as I want the Reserve HDs on the eBike), but that involves getting an HG SRAM splined freehub for the I9 wheels and that's a place I do not want to go!

Can't you tell from the chains, if they are both T-Type compatible (If I'm correct in what you're trying to do?). Or the chainrings will say T-Type only on them... If chains are both t-type (the type of chain you can't turn upside down),then you can swap mechs without a problem. If the Bike2 isn't t-type, the you can't (without swapping out other bits) šŸ™‚

Thanks again. I'll go check in a bit. eLyte has a flat top tho I think it's t-type.

Also I wonder if the Bosch (assume its Bosch) direct motor mount chainring would work with a full GX Eagle drivetrain. ie- is it a T type only chainring?

SRAM. Why, just why!

T-Type rings (Sram originals anyway) have this:

SRAM. Why, just why!

Yup, went through this when I bought my son a nice T-type crank and none of his Sram drivetrain worked with it!

what three bolt chainrings are T-type compatible

I don't think any are - but you can by 3rd party 6 bolt that are non-T-Type. Joys šŸ˜€

I am better informed but no less confused šŸ™‚Ā

LBS reckons I CAN run Eagle GX with the Bosch Chainring. He is checking but he's pretty sure Whyte don't change the chainring when spec'ing T-type OR GX Eagle on their bikes. That means I can go one way easily.

I've also read (but am sceptical) that a GX chainring WILL work with the rest of a T-type. But I've also read it won't. I guess I can try it.

You could be right - my Moterra SL came with T-Type AXS and I swapped it all out for mechanical Sram. I'm pretty sure I didn't change the chainring. I'll go look in a bit and check. 🤔

So my chain ring does NOT say T-Type where as the chain/cassette and mech do. Got to be worth a go and seems like @desperatebicycle had the same experience.

And yes it seems an aftermarket 3 bolt T-Type chainring is going to be the only thing I need to buy. I expect it'll all go the "Poo of the Rat" when I do it but at least I now have some form of plan!

I've looked at this and 3 bolt chainrings I found with the right offset were either Superstar or Wolf tooth as the chainline is different between t type and standard eagle.

Yep, the Moterra's non-t-type chainringĀ was running a t-type chain and now isn't and works fine. Must've been the other way around with my son's - the t-type chainring didn't like a normal chain and jumped about a bit.

I had issues with the t type cassette on my bike so while it went off to sram for warranty I ran a gx eagle cassette (with a small spacer behind it) and gx eagle chain with the t type mech and chainring. The chainring was fine with the gx chain, the mech was a bit grumbly shifting between the smallest gears but was put-uppable with compared to the defective axs cassette that came off. Bosch eeb too.
