[#3825819]

Anyone offer any tips on SRAM Red front mech set-up? All has been well till this week when it began over-shifting. Now after following set-up instructions I can get the balance right between not shifting up and over-shifting. Really rather annoying. Already marked the rear mech when it jumped whilst out on Thursday.

I swapped both the red front mechs on my race bikes for ultegra, that sorted the shite shifting. Sram have beefed up this years red f mech to sort this.

Its one of the "600" series front mechs you need. I got one of these in a band on when they were available a few weeks back for 7 quid! Only brzeons left now

Was serious advice from me also, sram f mechs are a bit grim, I love the rest of the groupset. Cheap fix, that will improve the front shifting no end. I guess it depends if you want it to work or match.

Right now it needs to work. I assume Shimano work fine with the double tap shifters? I can't see how it goes from good to bad in a couple of days.

I never thought the f mech was good to begin with, but I don't know what happened to yours. 6600 will work as pointed out earlier.

Either way it needs an LBS as I haven't a clue anymore.

Buy a 5600 or 6600 front mech. Fit it and jobs a goodun. The 600 series f/mechs work with the double taps

They are incredibly easy to fit. You dont need to go to your lbs.

At least you are no worse off than when you started this thread.

True, needs a new cable now as the end has frayed after the end cap came off. The cable isn't running very smooth, which I guess could be part of the problem. Can clearly see the sheeth of the cable (Gore) as it's been rubbed off the cable.

Imo, and all the usual caveats, the red front mech is a bit flexi and doesn't give a positive shift at the best of times. For the same reason I think they are more sensitive to poor set up, sticking cables etc. If you have been using it for a while you may have just got used to it, but I find the shimano mechs are more sturdy and give a more positive shift. I certainly no pro, but I race a lot, and just like my kit to work without me having to worry. This years red has ditched the carbon plate and gone for steel iirc, to also sort it.

I suspect that's it, heavy use in first three months and ables have stretched stuff bedded in etc. new cable and probably new mech should sort it.

The Ti red front mech can be a little tricky to set up I find that most people don't run enough cable tension to get it working smoothly. If it really annoys you a steel cage version (a red branded force mech) can be bought which is more positive.

Ta, I've checked and it is the steel version' I think tension is the issue. New cable ready to go on. Once I've worked out how to!

Ditch and plastic ferrules if there are any in the system.
I also find that SRAM f/mech set up needs less tension in the cable, not loose but not as tight as Shimano.

If I can't thread the inner into the existing
outer does it mean tape off and new outer?

You're having a right kerfuffle aren't you.

Is it a new inner? sounds like you're going to end up fraying it anyway

Yep new one. The original was a mess, the coating was coming off and sticking inside frame. I'm going to leave it to a professional I think. Better safe than sorry. Frustrating as never an issue doing my mtbs.

On other sti you should be able to thread it through ol without removing tape, can be a fiddle tho.
