So, after discovering that 2009 XT chainsets are fully compatible with 2011 XT 10 speed, i took the plunge and bought a 10 speed XT cassette, rear mech, shifters and an SRAM 1071 10sp chain.

Being the eager mechainic, i bolted them all to the (newly resprayed) Pitch in an enthuasitic way. IE: i just slapped on the chain without removing any links. When I went to tailor the chain lenght, I was a tad surprised to discover that 10sp power links are not re-usable like 8 or 9 speed ones. Bah! I checked the interweb for prices of replacement powerlinks....

£4 each!

9 speed powerlinks are £1.35 and they are re-usable.

What a bloomin rip-off! Hang your head in shame SRAM. I'll be buying KMC chains from now on.

PS: 10 speed is great!

SRAM gold ones (but not silver) are, KMC generally aren't on 9 speed I thought?

Sorry, quick highjack. Have been thinking about trying KMC, but not taken the plunge yet.

Which KMC chain is the equivalent of the SRAM PC971, and is the extra expense worth it?

thanks

I had this rant last week, between Shimano not supplying the only spares you might actually need (cue perfectly good set of XT hydraulic brakes in the bin for want of seals) and SRAM's blatant rip-off spares prices, its becoming embarassing how much we're getting played for mugs.

cheers foxy, I ordered some KMC missing links from Ribble - I hope they are indeed reusable. Even if not, they are cheaper than SRAM.

My issue has been trying to find a decent 116 link 10sp chain

All I could find was a Shimano hx something or other and even that was hard to track down

Madison have XTR 116 link 10 speed chains in stock. Your LBS should be able to source one.

Is it just me that reuses 10sp sram powerlinks then ?
I've reused one 3 times now and not had any problems apart from the fact they are a bit tight to remove and I wouldnt want to try reusing one trail side! But at home I reuse em ?

No but it's much easier and cheaper to use Missing Links

Clarks do a reusable 10spd powerlink. They are on CRC for less than 2 quid each.

I discovered this in a car park last week, luckily my 9 speed gold link kept it all together.

I reuse my 10-speed powerlinks. A pair of croc plyers and they come off 'easily' and can be reused. They're just too tight to get off by hand.

Ahh so SRAM are telling porkies then? I have never used the 10spd SRAM links as they say they are not re-usable but looks like they are? Maybe too tight to take off by hand so they calls that as non-reusable?

The missing links are reusable 🙂

wippermann connex removable 10speed link

http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/wippermann-connex-62-mm-10-speed-connex-link-each-prod9976/

works on all 10 speed chains and they are easier to undo than SRAM gold which to be fair and despite what people say are pretty easy themselves..

though if you are a CTC member you will think otherwise judging by the letters into their magazine..

Uplink:

as for 116 link chains.. SJS has stock in several types XTR, dura ace and HGX

http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/chains-10-speed-dept711_pg1/

shame wippermann is only 114 link wippermann chains are best.

13thfloormonk - sounds like a similar experience I had with some XTR brakes. Madison sorted them out under warranty(reluctantly) - as soon as I got them back I sold them and bought some hopes. Not as powerful, but knowing I can buy spares for them swayed me.

I found plenty of Shimano 116 link chains & bought one in the end but I really don't have a lot of confidence in them following breakages in the past
I really wanted KMC, SRAM etc. - I'll probably end up making my own 116s up by buying a spare for the extra links
