Need a new casssette for my full suss and looking to make it a bit lighter. Merlin prices are quite different for these two but read some bad reviews about the 980. Which should I go for?

The weight difference between the two is minimal according to http://www.sram.com/en/srammountain/cassettes/9speed/index.php

I think the 990 is more alloy freehub body friendly as more of the cogs are mounted on a carrier. With the 980 there is the potential for individual cogs to bite into the freehub making them hard to get on / off.

So if you have an aluminium freehub I would advocate 990 over 980 to save long term hassle.
