I have a BB30 bb on my bike. As predicted, it has gone after only 8 months. Can I replace just the bearings like I could on good old external bb cups or do I have to give SRAM half my life savings to replace the whole thing?

If you can get bearings out OK without damaging the circlips then get the bearings only/another brand (AFAIK).
Pre-greasing is your friend.
Oh and apparently you should be grateful it wasn't wailing like a tomcat straddling a hot exhaust pipe within 100 yds of ownership 😛
