Just spotted the SRAM PG-1170 11-36 cassette (11 speed) and I know this is designed for x1 drivechains, but wondered if you could match this with say 50/34 compact chainrings with a long cage derailleur? I have currently use 11-32, just wondered if two more teeth is a step too far in terms of difference? Anyone tried this?
It depends on two things, your derailleur's max sprocket and it's capacity - how much chain slack it can take up. You'll probably be able to get it to work with the 36t sprocket but it also needs to have a capacity of 41 teeth or more.
What model is it?
Ultegra RD-6800 GS. It's so long ago, I can't remember, is 41 the difference between teeth front and rear?
I’ve used one with a 105 mid cage mech and 46/36 chainrings. You may need a longer b screw
Apologies. I was being lazy. Just looked up the total capacity on the Shimano website and at 32T max capacity, my current derailleur is maxed out already! Case closed. And thanks joemmo for your imput.
It's the difference between (large front + large rear) - (small front + small rear)

If its this one then the capacity is 37T so you might be out of luck... Unless you fit a smaller front chainring

Many people exceed the capacities of their mechs with no issues. It often depends on things like the size and angle of your mech hanger, how much B screw you have to play with.
The simple answer is to try it out on your work stand and see.
I have been using this cassette for two years to replace a 32. I am fairly sure it would have been fine with the original mech but just incase I used a mech hanger extender which was considerably cheaper than a new mech and works perfectly.
