[Closed] Square Taper...chainset won't budge

[#3777210]

Evening all,

As title really. Come to replace the bottom bracket on the winter bike (so it's been through rough weather) and I cannot remove the chainset.

The crank extractor has stripped thread on both sides...brilliant.
Riding with no bolts in hasn't loosened it up.
Smacking the crank arms with a rubber mallet achieved nothing.

Now moved onto a small blunt chisel to try and create some movement, but nothing!

Any suggestions will be appreciated,

thanks

I am serious - sounds like cranks are 'unextractable' - so ride em till you have an issue, and then take a grinder to them - at least you can get them off and replace BB

i had this a few times back when i was in the workshop, a ball joint remover or whatever they are called, and a large hammer usually works

Try a gear puller looks like a 3 armed corkscrew, the arms grip inder the crank and you screw the handle down and it pulls the crank off, Halfords sell them,

Tonight put bike on its side and fuill the bolt hole and the crank with wd 40 or plus gas , to allow to soak in and hit with big hammer tomorrow.

or a heat gun on cranks, to warm them up, alloy expands faster than steel.

Heat gun worked for me. Then whack with hammer.

You need a Stein tool, comes with a tap to cut a new coarse thread in the old hole/s. Then apply fire to the thick end of the crank, and use Stein tool to loosen.

Decent LBS should be able to help, and you won't muller your frame.

thanks for the suggestions again, it's currently drowning in WD40.

I'll swing by the mech eng department tomorrow and ask kindly for the loan of a ball joint splitter, pretty sure I've used one ages ago and it did the job..

The kind people in the 'engines' dept at Uni are going to remove it for me, foc! Thought it was worth asking, thanks for all the suggestions though all.
