Hi

I'm thinking about going back to square taper BB. Fed up with replacing firstly ISIS and Hollowtech bearing every 5 minutes, although HT do last a bit longer. I was going to replace the HT cups but the chrome has chrome has come off the axle and it's starting to rust.

Anyone recommend some square taper cranks, there doesn't seem to be much choice. How do you calculate the axle length? The FSA RPM on CRC recommend 110.5, which sounds very short.

Thanks

axle length ought to be specified with the cranks.

so for example, Middleburn
http://www.middleburn.co.uk/tech_bblength.php
Middleburn cranks run a 48mm chain line for cross country and 50mm for downhill

For a standard MTB setup a 113mm axle is needed for ISIS or square taper.

Middleburn are a great option for SqT cranks.

How do you calculate the axle length?

It is dependent on the chainset you intend to use (although some frames with fat/wide chainstays need one a bit longer than the recommended one for the chainset)

Sheldon Brown's web site lists loads of cranks and the axle length they need

As per what SDB said, wide chainstays will amke a difference: use a 118mm tp axle on my Inbred as else the rings would almost hit the frame
