I'm old enough now to remember a time when Jumbo Visma didn't win the bike race.

Women's race was equally attritional. How Pfeiffer Georgi managed to come back so often and still be competitive I don't know. But Marlen Rousser is a machine once she gets a gap

Just reading the race reports now, sounds like a pretty grim day out.

I was working on the CiCLE Classic race in Melton Mowbray; it's a round of the British Cycling National Junior Men's Series in the morning and the BC National Women's Series in the afternoon.

The course is renowned for its really narrow roads and convoluted course which includes a dozen sectors of farm tracks and very broken roads so not dissimilar to a Spring Classic. Some stretches were really muddy after the rain yesterday and this morning. Was more like a CX race at times.

Both races were properly attritional - out of about 100-120 starters in both races, only about 25 finished in very fragmented groups. Good racing though, a fun day out.

Tour of Flanders next weekend!

So who’s going?
Heading over with friends for the sportive and some beers.
It means I can guarantee the weather will be bad…

No vans and no pog at DdV today so will be interesting to see how it pans out. The list of potential winners get much longer when those guys aren't there.

Groupd of 3 out front includes Alexander Kristoff, with a chase group of big hitters ~30s behind. Worth switching on for the last 30k for sure.

Fun side fact: Christophe Laporte is French for Christopher TheWindow.

Looks like some interesting tech being trialled at these cobbled races. We've had Victor Campenaerts on his Classified Powershift rear hub and now Jumbo-Visma using auto tyre pressure adjustment:

... and a lad in 2nd place using a suitcase full of courage (and hopefully nothing else). That was a magic second place - shouting at the screen from my turbo

Jumbo-Visma using auto tyre pressure adjustment

At the price of that tech, isn't that the kind of thing the UCI frowns on as giving an unfair advantage to wealthy teams and so potentially ban them?

Nope, all good apparently

The Inner Ring has his or her preview up too https://inrng.com/2023/03/ronde-van-vlaanderen-2023-preview/

Amusing and insightful:

Tadej Pogačar is the third of the Grote Drie because in a sprint with the two above [MVdP and WVA], how can he win? We saw this when he finished fourth in a two man sprint last year.

My prediction is that Pog will win the race, just not necessarily for himself.

One of the few crashes you can see exactly how it was caused. That Bahrain Victorious rider is not going to be popular.

Edit: I hear he's been DQ'd

There's a large number of riders struggling to keep it rubber side down.
