So I am new here. HI
So I took my bike to the local bike workshop which is thetford forest bike art to get the spokes tightened last week.
I checked today after a long ride and 3 of the spokes are already very loose and moving by around 3cm does this meen they done a rubbish job?
I'm not impressed but not sure if I should ask them to fix it for free or just find another shop to do it.
The wheel is a big fat mammouth that was new at christmas.
What do you guys think?
got back and have a chat with the wheel builder
Ok I will go up tomorrow and see what they say
It may be the wheel has had a big enough hit to the rim and that the wheel builder/wheel truer may have had to compmise with wheel tension to get it straight.
Buy the wheelpro book, PDF download and learn to do it yourself.
That "I've been let down by the local bike shop" feeling is why I learned to do everything myself.
Yes take it back. If there was that big a dent in the rim they should have mentioned it, sounds like they just did a bad job.

+1
So I went back up there and got nothing but attitude and none of the guys said sorry and I was told if I wanted them to have another go at it I would have to pay them again.
So I went home phoned up and complained then they said they would have do it again for free.
I was polite the whole time I was up there so there was really no reason for them to have such attitude.
They gave me about 10 different reasons why it had come loose so soon after tightening and none of them included them doing a bad job.
When I got the wheel back for the second time it was much tighter than when they done it last week so if they had done this in the first place there would really be no problem.
When I first went in I told them I do jumps so make sure it's really tight but I guess they didn't listen.
If you don't like guys with attitude slagging off your bike I would avoid this shop.

Name, shame and flame please.
Twice, if you like.
I can only think of two reasons if the rim is good. Under tension or uneven tension. Interesting to know what else they thought it could be.
Oh sorry didn't meen to post twice lol
The wheel is a good
It has strong rims (big fat mamouth) that are perfectly true and never had any sort of dent.
It has DT 2mm spokes and was built by one of the top bike websites.
All it needed was the spokes tightened up because after 6 month of biking round the forest they had come loose.
One guy telling me the wheel aint strong enough and I should get new wheel then another guy telling me the nipples are no good telling me I should have them rebuild it then the main guy comes along and blames the spokes telling me there cheap rubbish.
They were probably stronger wheels than anything they had in there little shop not sure why they felt the need to slag them down.

In the OP.
Bike Art, Thetford. Well known for being tossers it seems.
It's not a stand rim is it by any chance and are you tubeless

You obviously have a strong grasp of the intricasies of quality wheel building my friend.

I know its not easy that's why I had the bike shop do it.
But I was just pointing out that the rim was not buckled as people were asking about it.

Just a normal rim with a inner tube.

It is easy though. Buy the wheelpro book for £9 and do it yourself.
Here, I'll even give you a link...

I will get the book and learn how to do it my self thanks.
I have been teaching my self over the last year to do it all my self and I have built the bike my self from scratch and the only thing I can't do is built a wheel and service my front suspension.
I had those rims myself, couldn't cope with my weight and sloppy riding style. I sold them after a few days disappointment to a 12st lad for freeriding and big drops and him and his mates tried hammering the crap out of them one day and came back happy. I built them in to his hubs in front of him, my second build with them so I got a grasp of their building quirks. I ended up building them highly tensioned because they were a bugger to get evenly 'normally' tensioned and survive 'little' stuff.
Yes I think the guys really didn't have a clue what the rims were and how to tighten them but instead of admiting they done it wrong they just gave me a load of attitude.
For some reason (probably because I complained) they have put a load of white paint over my nice rims.
Any ideas how I get this stuff off?
Lighter fluid and a lot of rubbing with a soft cloth?
they were probably marking spokes to tighten. Amateurs!
Nail varnish remover?
to make sure they remebered which was drive and whihc was non drive 😀
because they were clueless like Al says
Tensioning up a more or less true wheel is quite simple

Take it back to the shop.
"we can't" - "ok, you'll be replacing them then."
I fail to see why it's your problem.
You must have really pissed them off. As well as the white paint they've put some gopping stickers on your frame.
Bike Art are well known for being tossers.
LOL I like my stickers.
Also I had read all the bad stuff about them but I didn't think this would affect them fixing my wheel and I thought with all the exspensive bits in there they would know what they were doing.
I wont be going back there again.
