Is under 5 percent variation the goal with spoke tension or will under 10 percent variation do. I'm determined to get a wheel under 5 percent but losing a bit of radial true, about the thickness of a piece of paper in a few spots, the rim joint always seems to be an issue radially.

The thickness of a piece of paper? Step away from the truing stand...

5% is pretty good but maybe more important than overall variance is tension evenness around the wheel.

I gave up at 10%, was building for rim brakes so decided to let true-ness take precedence!

On a mountain bike with Gert big wobbly tyres on it, I'd give ¼mm trueness up for more consistent spoke tension any day of the week.

5% is always my personal limit but I'm sure I've seen Park mention 20%.
