It's really hard to set off a speed camera on a bike. We spent a couple of hours trying in Plymouth a few years back.

And your right, that's most likely a remote flash controlled by radio.

Appart from anything else, cameras tend to go off at around 3/4 of the road marking stripes IME...

I think they just stuck a remote camera flash on top of the speed camera and took a picture. The camera flash goes off automatically when they take the picture and you have just posted the results.

they take two pictures once at the start and once at the end to get your average speed.

it might be possible if the bike had been heading towards the camera rather than away as the spokes at the top of the wheel would have being doing twice the speed of the bike

It would have to be an exceptionally well timed photo to get a perfectly sharp image of a 30mph+ rider at the exact moment the speed camera flash went off!

I have tri3ed fairly hard to set of speed cameras. I can get the advisory ones to register - you know the smiley face if under the limit or the ones that tell you your speed but I have not been able to get gatsos to flash - either too slow ( I was doing around 35) or just not a big enough radar reflection

So I think that pic is faked

oh... and i've been pulled over by a copper with a radar gun and stopped by the Polizei for jumping a red light, but been able to set off niether speed camera or red-light camera.

So, not somebody sat on the roof pointing a bright light at the road then as the rider passes by. Easy photo to take if it is?

Lots of clues to suggest it's a set-up.

The speed camera's gun is relatively low powered, as it only needs to illuminate the reflective number plate of a car. If you consider that even low-powered commuting LEDs can illuminate a road sign/number plate 100m away, then the speed cam would only need a flash as powerful as on a mobile 'phone cam or similar. Considering the amount of illumination the speed cam flash on that pic appears to be providing, I'd say it's definitely not the real one, but as BBB says, a remotely triggered flashgun next to the speed cam. Probably triggered using a slave cell reacting to the flash on the picture taking cam. Plus, the frontal light from the camera flashgun would 'drown out' the speed cam flash. No way would a speed cam flash be powerful enough to provide that much light, to create a shadow from the bike onto the road. Have you ever seen one that pumps out that much light? Barely more than a very brief flicker. Otherwise it would blind on-coming motorists. And aren't some infra-red anyway, so invisible to 'normal' photography? A poor hoax.

Not many things you can say would be a lot radder on a road bike. You could be going 50% faster.

Dual sync flash. One on camera, remote one on the the camera.

It's a setup...
One off camera flash on / near the speed camera, generating the light going forward and right of the rider.
One off camera flash down low'ish to the left of the picture frame, generating the light on the side of the rider, and the shadow to his left, across the path and up the wall. You can tell it's low because the shadows of the wall are up high on the house...

Oh - and pretty sure the little dark box, top left of the speed camera (as we look at it) is the flash...

I have set off a camera before by bike(in a 40 zone!), but it was with about 5 other riders so that probebly helped as i have ridden past the same camera at a similar speed and not set it off.

Exactly! I have a remote trigger for my flashgun, and if you point the flash at the camera from a distance, you get a picture just like that. It would also be virtually impossible to take a pic like that and time your exposure to the camera flash maually.
I reckon I could replicate that shot fairly easily without any photoshopping at all 🙂

rob warner set off a camera in some film or other when he was using a big petrol powered fan on his back so i guess it's possible to trigger one.

also, someone triggered the camera in bloxham near banbury by bike many many years ago, and supposedly the police doggedly traced the cyclist (somehow) and got them a fine. this may be a myth of course, i don't know who the person was...

I have never set off a camera, even doing 35mph past one on a road bike. I think they are set too high. I really can't see a 36 toothed big bike tyred doing the required speed to set one off.

Pic is a set-up with a remote flash unit mounted on the speed camera plus another just to the left of the camera. Would have looked better with a light trail from a rear LED.

You can set cameras off on a moped - if you go fast enough - and they're not much bigger than a DH bike.

I think the speed is an issue - in my local area the cameras in 30 zones were set at 43mph so you'd need to tuck in on a big hill to reach that.

I've registered on those signs that tell you your actual speed but you need to be over the limit (40) for it to flash up. Downhill on a road bike so easy enough.

My first thought was that the flash is coming from the top of the post that the camera's mounted on, not from the flash unit on the camera. But seeing as its the UK's no. 1 freerider, he's probably set off the 50mph limit camera by rolling past after hucking off the roof next to it. Metal Mulisha!!!!

Looks faked, however bikes can set off gatsos. I'm sure I remember a documentary where the showed a bird setting off a gatso.

Me and a friend set one off a few years back, 53 in a 40 IIRC, 2 of us though, so bigger 'target' which I suspect is the issue. Never done it since.

I set off the one at the bottom of the hill coming into Brighton on the L2B a couple of years back. I was doing 50 something according to the computer on my bars. I think it is 40mph limit.

Can't remember if I had other riders around me or was on my own. Got a round of applause from the coppers parked there though.
