Hi all,
Just picked myself up a 2010 hardrock sport mainly due to it being and xxl (23") frame and being 6ft 4 myself. I see from reviews that some of the components are slated a bit for their quality. Anyway the sram x4 that is fitted has seen better days, considering upgrading. Any suggestions without paying silly money? Also can I change from the 3x8 set up? Also the bike has canti brakes but has fixings for discs, any suggestions for brakes? I know I would need new wheels

Deore all the way.

Just replace stuff as it wears out. You don't need to go above Deore level to get a massive improvement. If you've got Suntour forks on there, it is worth swapping them out, as they weigh a ton and are utterly rubbish.

The shifters seem very stiff, although my other bike has alfine, and I know its a small thing but the windows are missing off them. The brakes dont seem great but may just want a good adjust.
What sort of thing would you suggest in terms of fork upgrade?

Are the bars alloy on a 2010 sport?

My son has a HR Disc ('12) and it came with really heavy steel bars. Narrow at 640mm too.

He now has some 685mm Easton EA30's which saved a chunk of weight.
