Some great deals currently on this bike (£4500, reduced to £2,500). Reading a review by Bikeradar, they seemed to like the bike but found it pretty heavy considering the components. Anyone ridden one that could comment? - Looking at an XL (6:2ft, 80kgs) for light trails and long XC rides (60 to 80miles+), to go alongside my Giant Trance X (150mm trail bike).

https://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/yay-new-bike-day-downcountry-uptrail-whatever/

A couple of us have got them and no real complaints I’ve read so far.
I can’t say I find mine to be particularly heavy but I I guess it depends what you’re comparing it with.
I think mine may actually be lighter than my hardtail.

Which Bikeradar did you read? I didn't notice any complaints about the 2021 model they reviewed. It's a solid bike, definitely a good choice for a trail rider looking to get into XC and wanting to cover miles while having fun.

fab bike - just swap out the wheels and tyres asap - they’re the weakest link - stock wheels are about 2200g/set when you can get wheels that are 1600g/set for less than £300 - been some wheel bargains recently too

I certainly don’t find my s-works version at 22.5 lbs heavy

Love mine. Swapped most things on it, but great frame.

Epic EVO is a decent and not heavy bike. If weight is a priority (it is for me as I weigh sod all meself) then I’d be nudging you toward

A) budgeting for a new set of wheels as the base model and comp models come with pretty heavy wheels
B) looking at the comp spec as a minimum for better transmission and suspension.

I’ve got a comp and can recommend it. It’s 11.5kg with pedals which is light by most people’s measure but that’s after swapping wheels and tyres. The original wheels are heavier than they need to be. The original 2.35 tyres are justifiably heavy cos they perform well but I’m happier on a lighter tyre.

Have one, 6'2 on xl and other said not at all heavy other than stock wheels.

Good base to use and upgrade as time / wear out / cash or addiction dictates.

Only stock bits on mine now is frame and shocks :/

But then i have done 5000+ miles apparently acvording to strava.

Thanks all. How do you find the 120mm Reba?

Can’t comment on the reba, have the comp spec with the 120mm sid select + and it’s outstandingly capable.

I think the Reba fork is one of the best components on the bike. I didn’t keep it, as I already had Fox 34s, but I’ve always been happy with them on other bikes.

Another one here who picked up an epic Evo. I certainly wouldn't call it a heavy bike. Only real change I have made is as above wheels and tyres. Swapping to JRA monitors and barzo/mezcal tyres saved almost a kg.

It's fantastic, suits me down to the ground as a wheels on the ground hill climber.

Mine is around 11.1kg. It's the S-Works frame in XL with carbon wheels, but SLX/XT parts and Barzo/Mezcal tyres, so could still be a lot lighter. Lightest suspension bike I've had. Excellent bike for covering a lot of ground.

I'm 72kg, hardly heavy, and the rear bottoms out sooner and more abruptly than other bikes I've ridden with similar travel. It's a fairly linear linkage, which is fine for most xc purposes. The caveat here is mine came with a Fox shock, which may be higher volume than a Deluxe? Possibly not an issue for Rock Shox equipped bikes if so.

Haha Barzo/mezcal here also. Seems to be the tyre of choice for us epic EVO lot.

I got the silt xc wheels, a good 500-600g saving on the wheels that come on the comp and definitely makes things feel more sprightly, alleviated the feeling of the original wheels tryna dictate the direction of the bike.

As is my MO I spent the evening on comparisons as I’ll be looking for a Spark replacement in September.

My setup would be as per Goldfish as I also have the Silt wheels, but am put off by no lockout/firm option for racing TBH.  Otherwise the £3200 Spec. Are knocking them out for is the same as my Spark was in 2018, so great value and they have the fork I want too.

Im deciding whether to get one or just go all out on a race bike and get the new supercalibre, bearing in mind I have a 150mm trail bike as well.

I have one, love it, probably 2021 model. However with me being a good bit taller than you it seems just a bit on the compact side for me and the S6 frame of the Stumpjumper Evo fits me better. But you've already got the Trance anyway.

Kryton.. my Epic evo comp came witha  rear shock with lockout.. granted it's NOT remote, but that suits me. TBH it's such a good platform that I just leave it open all the time.

Wondering about size.  It seems pretty short in reach. I’m 5’9” and wonder whether a L with a shorter stem might be better than a M.

Dunno if all Spesh's are discounted there but my 2022 Stumpy Comp Carbon has dropped from $7200 to $5000 or so which was a bad time for me to try and sell mine on Marketplace... Boo.

Kryton I haven’t locked out my shock once since I set it up. Maybe I would on a long fire road climb, but the platform on the basic shock seems good to me, and I’m pretty heavy.

I'm 5-9 and riding a medium (2020MY) and it feels very comfortable. Don't have gibbon arms.

As per DrP above, if anyone wants to try a large Epic Evo for size and you're in the Chilterns then give me a shout and you're welcome to try mine for size.

I made my decision and that is to stick to my guns, but thanks for the feedback.   For health reasons I need to get through this race season to see if it’s appropriate for me to continue with racing, there is no point investing in new race bike when I have a decent one already until that’s determined, no matter how good the deal is.

So it’s off to Tftuned to get my annual suspension service done for the Spark…
