One of my SPD peddles has developed an unwelcome "wobble". There is a lot of play along the length of the axel - the peddle basically moves > 1mm along the axle length - and the rubber/plastic seal where the axle enters the peddle is no longer sealing.
They were the cheap £30 entry level ones and have quite a bit of surface rust so I've replaced them with some XT ones anyway - but thought it might be worth keeping these as a spare pair / in case I get a second bike. The question is are the knackered beyond ecconomic repair? Park tools suggests to take them appart using a specialist shimano tool that I've not priced but assume won't be cheap - but it also implies that I should be doing this for routine maintainence - do people dissasemble their peddles regularly?
If there is already this much play I guess the ball bearings will need replaced - but are the 'races' also likely to be dead and therefore the peddles only suited to the bin?

My m520 pedals developed play but Shimano are cup and cone so I just stripped them down, cleaned, re-greased and put them together again. No hassle and have been spinning fine and play free for months now.
You need the plastic remover tool to remove the spindle, there's a special adjuster tool to adjust the bearings but its not necessary.
The bearings/races may be OK, new spds are cheap though.
I'm still running spds from 1995. Had to strip, clean, adjust bearings and regrease earlier this year but still work fine. Do need some new body plates as the cleat locating recess has worn to nowt so clipping in can be difficult at times.
