Looking to get some decent cheapish pedals AND shoes for the xc/commuting hack (obviously sticking to mtb shoes as i'm off the bike and walking from time to time)

So as this is my first forray into this i'm looking for some straightforward pedals that are beginner friendly and some relatively warm/weather resistant shoes (as the cold is drawing in!)

My budget is around £100 for the lot, What's good for around this mark?

Cheers!

You can usually pick up Shimano M520 pedals for £20 or so which leaves plenty of cash for some mid-level Shimano or Specialized shoes.

+1 on the 520's I use them exclusively. woolly socks are your friend for winter feet toastiness

Something like the abouve should be good for commuting - I wouldn't get canvas/suede MTB shoes as they will take ages to dry if you get soaked 🙂

Another vote here for the m520, been using mine for about 4 years on my full suss and only just starting to crreak a little. I'll happily replace them with another pair once they die completely.

Shimano shoes are very comfortable although the sizing can be a bit on the small side so may be worth your while to size up.

Foxyrider, how did you find the Diadora shoes?

Not had the diadoras - was just looking for an example of a race type shoe with probably a stiffer sole and will dry out quicky if I am honest stayhigh 🙂 I use spesh BG shoes for MTB but wanted to find something cheaper for the OP 🙂

I have a couple of pairs of cheap shoes from Aldi (which look very like a cheapo copy of those Diadora's) which I use with M520's and work well.

I'd avoid cheap shoes (unless the aldi ones are good) they often have crap uppers and flexy soles. Fit is important too.

M520s fine though.

Well i'll definately plump for the M520s then. If they're as good as you all say at that price point i can hardly say no!

Hmm, now to find nice shoes... i know i can't afford proper winter boots, and i'll avoid canvas/suede as you say foxy.

i'll nip to the local LBS and have a good look for a pair that actually fits, not risking the internet with sizing, particularly if shimano are dodgy with sizing

Ta!

Check what fits in LBS then buy online to save some pennies 😉
