I've found that some shoes in the past have lost some of their sole stiffness resulting in sore feet, yet the upper was still in good condition. Seems a shame to bin them.
Another pair I currently have are slowly falling apart but are still comfy, they are a touch smelly, not bad life length of 5 years.
Just wondering how long do you keep your SPD shoes for? Does carbon soles stay stiffer longer?
Got a pair of mtb SPDs that are 11 or 12 years old & still going strong. Shimano something or others.
One pair of road shoes are 10 years old and still in very good conditions - the insole could probably do with replacing as it's a bit flat.
I can't say I've noticed any reduction in sole stiffness over time.
Generally a couple of years and then I change them for something that I like the look of, so long as it fits. Never actually worn a pair out.
My current gravel SPD shoes are my old XC SPD shoes, which I got about 14 or 20 years ago.
Bit flexy but I can't remember if they were always like that or not.
Carbon soled roadie SPD SL shoes coming up to 8 or 9 years old and still in great nick, certainly not lost stiffness.
Tried putting aftermarket insoles in them?
My M089 must be 7 years old but some of the grips have been ripped off - bought a 'used' but excellent condition pair recently as the M089's are great. Road shoes tend to last much longer. My expensive Spesh Pro Carbons must have been 20 years old, but they 'expired' last week - the plastic surrounding the strap ratchet mechanism finally perished and cracked off the shoe - no way to repair it.
Never had soles go flexy though. Tend not to get carbon MTB shoes as you ideally want a bit of flex for walking. Carbon for road bike though.
Uppers are right state these days, but I have some nylon soled(?) Shimano SH-M121G SPD shoes I still use from 2006, had a cheap DHB Dorika MTB pair ready in the spares box for well over a year!
My DHB carbon soled road shoes are ~4 years old now, still fine besides fair bit of wear on the tiny walking platforms.
Makes small sacrifice for MW80s to last yet another winter…
