PX website states max48mm for 650b and 38mm for 700c.
I don't tend to use mudguards and looking to push the limits on the 650b certainly. It looks like their would be more space than just a 48mm, has anyone tried a 2.0 or 2.1 on the Clement Ushuaia rims? Its hard to find something knobbly 650b and <2.0
How much space do you really need between rubber and frame/ fork to be safe?
Tubeless would be a bonus
not loads of help but my friend uses 43mm 700c gravel kings and we did a pretty muddy ride up salisbury plain and he didn't complain on clogging. he swapped from 650b 2" to 700c as he felt they were faster
700x42 with clearance would be ace! Same as London Road.
Got the WTB 650b Rabger in 2.0, fits fine on the front but won't be quite enough clearance on the back - only 2mm between lugs and stays, so I'll try it with the 43mm rear which should work well for rougher stuff
Can’t help on 650b sizing but I’m running wtb resolute 700x42mm no issue

Why do manufacturers always give such conservative maximum widths if a 42mm fits fine but they claim 38mm?
How much clearance is acceptable to allow for movement (not much with 12mm bolt-thru) or debris on the tyre from damaging the frame/fork?
Yes front and rear. Haven’t ridden in proper slop yet but no hesitation in doing so maybe 4-5mm clearance with 42mm but some tyres come up big or small depending on rim. I’m running clement rims that are wider than some.

because not every manufacturers 42mm is actually 42mm, some are a lot narrower and some wider

because its Planet-X - one frame might take 26x4" and the next only have clearance for 26x1.8" - roll the dice
