[Closed] sp pd-8 dynamo hubs

You'll not notice it once it's built up and you start pedalling. It's just all that magnetic resistance.

When not mounted in a fork they feel awful but as mentioned above once you actually ride it you won't even know it's there.

FFS! You guys will argue about anything, why can't you all just agree for once?

I've just ordered one but having read this I am quite worried that I will notice the drag when I start riding. Have I made a big mistake?

Personally have one myself, at first I was really worried and even regretting it, but after building the wheel up and mounting it on the fork, you can't even feel it and I mean that! It even spins freely (kinda :D)

The only mistake is not buying one sooner 🙂 All dyno hubs feel like this when you turn the axle by hand: at virtually zero rotational speed the magnets just want to settle according to the field, and it's only noticeable because you're twisting the axle at a radius of about 5mm. Once they're spinning up, it's a non issue: everything's smooth and all you have is the drag of the hub providing the power, and you won't feel that.

Another question, looking at buying SON Edelux II to go with the dynamo hub, cant quite make out how the connection should be made to the hub, is there a specific connector to buy? I think the standard son connector is different, the connector that came with the hub just looks like a cosmetic cover, is that meant to hold the wires in place?

SON = spade connectors; SP, Shimano and just about everyone else use the plastic connector.

I can't see how the plastic connector is meant to work, it is just a cover.

You push pared back wires through the two holes, fold them back into the grooves and then push the other part on to hold it all together. Really rather simple.

Simple, but not that obvious, they could have put some form of instruction in the box or on their website.

Anyway, everything is ordered, kind of looking forward to seeing how this dynamo malarkey works out. Next project will be some form of charging device.
