Are there any natural trails worth doing in the Gatehouse of Fleet area?

Cheers G

Try contacting some of these guys

they might know otherwise the answer is no. Some off piste at Kirry if you could meet up with some of the 'billies.
Nearest is a push up of Cairnsmore or Merrick but only if the weather is good.nothing but sheep tracks in most of the hills around there and bogs!!
Some bits of Southern upland Way are rideable but not easy to make a decent out & back I would imagine.

Adding this

from gave link onto Dalbeattie makes for a good ride ๐Ÿ’ก
You can also link it from Kipford, there is a track out of the forest at Barnbarroch.
Another track leads out to Colvend and then take the road down to Rockcliffe. Then you can take the coastal path along to Castle Point view point or the track going past the caravan park.

This route is just as good the other way round. Take the track out of the forest and turn left on the main road heading down to Sandyhills. Find the track by going through the caravan park, bit of a hike after the bridge over the burn.

Also some natural stuff out of Mabie over to New Abbey but not easy to explain.

There's enough natural trails/paths in the Cally palace hotel woods to keep you amused for a couple of hours as long as you don't mind a few laps, if you feel like it you can head through the Cally Palace grounds keeping the water to your right and end up at Sandgreen holiday park, follow the road through to Carrick bay for a pleasant pootle and perhaps take yourself round to Knockbrex castle and treat yourself to an ice cream at cream of galloway on the return route - very scenic. Or head into Castramon woods and venture around Rusko castle - lots of small short sections of trails but nothing of any length.

The descent from Cairnsmore of Fleet is decent but it's a straight up and back route unless you want to drop down onto the Clints of Dromore near to Gatehouse/big water of fleet viaduct but the route from cairnsmore is rather tussocky and wiser to attempt after dry weather.

From Gatehouse you can head up to Gatehouse viaduct B796 and cut through the forest using cycle route 7 coming out at Clatteringshaws, from here you can head up Benniguinea radio mast for cracking views and treat yourself in the new cafe at Clatteringshaws at the bottom. Or you could head round the left side of Clatteringshaw loch for 1mile and down the old edinburgh road/very rough path to the Black loch and from there head along the forest road till you come to the top of Heartbreak hill on the Kirroughtree black route and decide how much of the trail you wish to do, a good bail out option is to cut a right at the bottom of the last black section (Jabberwocky section) and that's you back on the outward bound section of the Black trail that you can follow/ride to McMoab and then along the main A712 road and back through to Big water of fleet viaduct and back to gatehouse.

Check out the routes on an ordnance survey map as it's rather hard to describe the exact routes online.
