Anyone recommend a campsite somewhere in the middle between Winchester and Eastbourne and close to the route?

I think you can camp at the Truleigh Hill hostel?

What's your plan for carrying the camping gear?

I've thought aboud this before, and I reckon a hammock and a couple of trees a way off track would be the best option, unless you've got someone who can meet you at a campsite with your gear and take it away afterwards.

Or stay at the hostel if you decide you don't want to carry any more than necessary. That's what I've ended up doing the times I've ridden the SDW

Thanks Nedrapier. I'm down this week to reccie my attempt at a SD double in July. My plan was to take my camper van and park halfway along the route, then do two days of out and back to Winchester then Eastborne. So looking for a campsite really. Cheers

Ask on the Southdownsmtb forum?
You might be better off with a campsite Around Lewis / Brighton. Then its a few hours each way to recce the lot.
Good Luck , not done it , never will even 1 way is a mega ride but the weather will play a huge part, especialy the windspeed.
Might be worth leaving late evening from Eastbourne , then hopefully get blown along the following afternoon by the prevailing wind

You could speak to the folk at Truleigh Hill Youth Hostel. They may well accomodate you, they've always seemed pretty laid back. They own the field opposite the youth hostel too, I reckon they'd let you park up in there if it's free and you ask nicely!
