its our sons 2nd birthday next month, and the time has come for his first bike. im keen to get him an islabikes rothan, its a scoot along type of thing with no pedals, but samcamsmum isn't to keen to pay a hundred quid for a bike without pedals. any one had any experience with scoot type bikes?
get one get one get one
my 1st boy had one and is now flying along on his isla cnoc14 now at the tender age of 3 1/2 he had a rothan from 2yrs and was soon scooting around everywhere, my soon to be 2yrs old 2nd son is already feet off the ground on it now so will probably be using pedals even sooner.
i was amazed at the 5mins it took to transition from scoot to pedals, its ace!!
dont worry about cost they are well worth it imo
Islabikes Rothans are great ours will be passed on to my third child soon. To be honiest Islabikes tend to fetch good ££ on eBay I have spotted a few Rothans go for around £70 😯
We've got an islabike for our lad, cnoc16 I think and they are great bikes. I'm sure I remember seeing that they do a trade in type deal for when you come to go up a size. Alternatively I'm sure you'll get a good price for it when the time comes to selling it on.
We spent £100 on 12" kids bike (specialized) for our daughter, it's been good, particularly the coaster brake which taught her to control her speed. However for our son who's now 18 months I think we'll be looking at a pedaless bike. Our daughter still has no real concept of balancing.
As for the cost, point out to samcamsmum that something like an Ilabike Rothan will have good resale value on Ebay if looked after, you'l get at least 50% of the inital cost back so really it's only a £ 50 bike at worst.
My boy has just taken to his Rothan. It's wonderful going biking in the wood behind the house with him at 2 1/2. I'm that pwoud I've posted vids on my Facebook page.
geoffj junior 1 learned to scoot on a 12" wheeled bike with the cranks and chain removed out of a local skip.
geoffj junior 2 has a Ridgeback scoot which is still a little too big for her.
The skip option is good if you get the right bike.
Don't forget that Islabikes do trade in against your next bike.
i like the idea of the good resale value, but with a third kid on the the way, it wiil no doubt get passed down.
our eldest also has a 12" specialized and is having a few balance problems, which got me thinking about the rothan in the first place. thanks for the advice, ill get one ordered i think.
Thump (3.5yrs) has a Islabike Cnoc 14 and it's a beauty.
Before that he had a Addams Norco. Lovely wee balance bike costing £60 or so.
You can definitely get cheaper,
my Nephew bought a Puky trainer bike for his son (2 years), it was a £60 in halfords. It was really light, adjustable saddle, no pedals (obviously) and did really well. The small boy (great nephew) loved it and commuted to nursery on it. Then he got an isla bike cnock (with pedals a year) and a bit later - but still played on the puky trainer bike.
do it. littlelister#1 now won't walk anywhere! and he's already planning his bike with pedals for christmas...he turned 3 last week and has been scooting with his feet up since march (he got it last christmas).
here's the sort of fun you can look forward to:

🙂
cheers lister, thats just sold it for me! shouldn't laugh, but i did, sorry!!! cant wait to watch my little one crash like dad!
Another vote for Puky as a cheaper equivalent. Well made and robust, ours is now happily doing the job for Heathen #3 and *still* looks shiny.
Our lad had a Rothan at 18 months and a Cnoc for his third birthday, he was peddaling by the after a few weeks.
They are great little bikes, well made, light and functional, proper bits of kit, just like your own bike.
Lister - that video made me laugh so much I nearly spat out my dinner! Brilliant!
Rothan... doitdoitdoitdoitdoit!
Brilliant little bikes - standover is lower than some so smaller peeps can fit them. We got one at about 20 months - absolutely sorted on it by his 2nd birthday. And once they got the balance sorted moving on to a "proper" bike when they're big enough is easy... Do it!!! My lad is now 4 and bombing around on his CNOC 16, Isla bikes are gems you will not regret getting one. I can now go out biking for an hour with my lad and because his so light and fun to ride I get out out of breath keeping up with him (or is that because I'm so unfit?)
Scoot, Rothan and Zoom all have slightly different shapes - basically how low/high the saddle goes and the saddle to handlebar reach - so bit like a "normal" bike then.
Therefore if you can check out which fits best - you'd do it for your own bike...
It was a Rothan here and (for the third time on here) he just started on his Cnoc about 10 days ago at 3 years and 4 months - did about 1km, never had stabilisers.
Whichever you go for they are brilliant.
Same as everyone else really. Got a Rothan for my oldest at 2, he's now on the bigger size Cnoc and I can even ride with him on the right trails at 4.5 years old now.
Just got my 2 year old girl a new Rothan (with brake). Think it's a worthwhile improvement (although the lad never knackered himself). But, once they get confident, they can really get speed up and braking with feet isn't always great 😉
Trade in values for Rothans are low with Islabikes, c.30% (IIRC) and that's for v.good condition ones. The guy on their phones was dead straight though and recommended selling them on privately.
If I get round to it I'll probably flog the lad's old Mk1 (no brake).
Tesco Balance Bike - £37.99

My elder son learned on it and my younger son is learning on it at the moment. they love it. Same idea as the Rothan but a lot cheaper. I just flipped the brake lever upside down and onto the left side of the handlebar so they learned from an early age that the rear brake was on the left....
I bought my 2 year old a LikeaBike Mountain, which has been absolutely awesome. In the two and half year that he's had it I've not needed to do anything to it apart from raise the saddle to adjust seat height. I've hear many reports of people having to regularly tighten bolts up on cheaper imitations, and of them falling apart. It has to be said that it is a bit on the pricey side though.
My 2 year old rode his for two years before I upgraded him to an Islabike Cnoc 16, which he loves to bits, but even better, he was able to start riding it without stabilisers after about 10 minutes, which I was pretty amazed at. Proud moment!
Here are a load of pictures and mini review of the LikeAbike Mountain, and here's a piece of [url=
