.....that isn't too tough on the wallet. I didn't think that we were going to be able to afford it after a few other holidays this year, but I've just found flights for us in October for 160 quid. We'd be going for 3 nights in October half term. Any recommendations?

You could always camp in Amsterdam Bos, quite far out but it's cheap cheap.

I stayed here recently. It's mental and I loved it.
I have had about 40 nights in hotels this year and this is probably my favourite place yet.
It is very odd, a former prison or mental home I think.
All rooms individually designed. Properly bonkers.
Really easy to get to. About 10 mins out of town on a tram.
Near the cool brewery under the windmill too.

Not fussed about hotels myself really but the best one I've stayed in anywhere was this

Haven't a clue how much, I think the wife got it on some deal. Lovely old shipping company building. Enormous squishy bed.

We found it cheaper to hire a little flat in Amsterdam than book a hotel. They are sometimes called a B&B, but the breakfast part was just food left in the fridge for us to eat.
