[#1118493]

I'm trying to fit some SKS full mudguards to my gf's Roadrat but can't get the rear one close enough to the mounting point between the chain stays with out it fouling the front mech. It has fitted a dual pull xt bottom swing/conventional front mech and the mudguard hits the cable cam thingy. Do i need a different type of front mech such as an older bottom pull front mech where the mech does not have the cam that the cable goes round first or will a lower profile road mech work or does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks

This is a really common question on here.

Using a long bolt and a section of felt tip pen outer as a spacer seems to be the accepted method.

i hacksawed the 'guard off at the point it gets to the front mech. didn't seem to affect coverage too much.

I had the same problem...

I did the big long bolt thing at the bottom too - this worked a treat...

However, having resolved the issue at the bottom bracket - i got one at the wishbone... The floating bracket on my sks guard was too short to reach the wishbone, so my guard is only attached in 3 places, which makes it r-a-t-t-l-e all the bloody time...

So I'm going to be drilling a hole in the frame in the nice flat bit where the seatstays meet the wish-boney-bit and tapping it so i can bolt a long piece of M5 thread directly into the frame and then through a hole I'm about to drill in the guard... All to be held in place with a few nice little nuts...

I just hope i can drill the various holes straight and in the correct places...

I'll post up pics if i ever get it done...

i wish someone made some kind of extension bracket for this kind of thing, as i get the same problem on my current bike trying to fit a mudguard to 440mm long rigid forks. Current solution is a collection of zip ties.

I was going to cut up a bit of tin from a food can and file the edges smooth - cut to length and pop a few holes in - but decided this would look truly gopping...

Hence the drill and tap option - which handily should work well because of the frame...

Surely not too hard to find an appropriate piece of flat metal from somewhere, drill a couple of holes in it, and bolt it on? Or rather than an extension to those flimsy standard brackets, replace it all together with a similarly bent and drilled piece of al strip or some such?
