Hey all, i'm a girl (honest!) with a bike and a van, looking to take a trip to the alps in the summer. I fancy Morzine as i'll be on my own and it's lively. I'll be looking to sleep in my van too. Can anyone share their exeriences of places to park, the culture, where to ride?

There's usually a few vans parked up in the main car park by the tennis courts. I believe they sometimes get moved on but I've always seen someone there every year. You can't stay there the night before market day though. Plenty of wild spots out of town too. There's a couple of proper pay sites too if you fancy that.

It's a nice town. Bustling but far from busy. Plenty of bikers around and friendly "locals" (lots of brits plus people from all over)

Bike parks in Les Gets and above Chatel plus miles of other lift assisted purely downhill or mostly downhill xc trails. All easy to get to by lift from Morzine or drive over if you want the van nearby.

Thanks. Do I need to use the lifts? Or Can I just bike from the town?

You could ride up but I wouldn't bother. Get a lift pass or your main experience will be miles on miles of rocky fire roads or tarmac.

It might seem daunting now but it's a small town and almost everyone is English. You'll learn your way around in no time.

There's a great campsite in Les Gets which is a good place to base yourself until you get your bearings. Swimming pool, hot showers and a nice view of Mont Blanc. There will be other riders to get advice from and tag along with.

Morzine/Les Gets is probaboy the best choice for a first Alps trip, good for solo too and about as "lively" as you'll find in tje Alps in the summer. Bike trails are well signposted and the who,e area links up, you should ride all you fancy of Morzine amd Les Gets and the Chatel Park. Morzine camp site is a little out of town but has showers etc. A few vans/tents usually half way up the first lift just before the 4x track in Morzine too, not so conveninet for after oub/dinner mind ! I am sure you'll find some riders to hook up with if you want, post another thread nearer the time. Have a look at this thread for some quality ideas for non-bike park riding (ie on hiking paths).

Thanks for the encouragement people. It seems very daunting. I've never driven abroad and i've never been on a solo holiday. To date neither have I ridden out of the UK but that'll change in June when I go to Spain ๐Ÿ™‚

I've never driven abroad

Every time you get in the car say out loud "Drive on the right" - the motorways are pretty easy, it's the smaller roads and turning left and right which can be a bit tricky but in particular it's pulling off - hence the advice

Based on your attitude here you'll be just fine, check out the other thread and drop @Stoner an email nearer the time

Some basic stuff - it's a really long drive!!
If your doing it solo pick somewhere to stop on the way there and back and make sure you have something to listen to. Depending on where your starting from a stop at somewhere like Dartford then a morning tunnel works well.

Make sure you have the French driving kit http://www.drive-france.com/checklist/

I did a mix of campsites and car parks when I was last there, was just a bit nicer in the campsites for sitting around etc. downside was they campsites were a little bit out of town - though the view from the Les Gets one was stunning. Unless your trying to keep costs right down I'd go for a few nights in a couple of them - if it rains a nice shower is very welcome (when it rains it rains)

Not to sound too boring but check out your travel insurance for getting you/van home if you can't. Last one I saw ended up with a mate getting his GF flown out to drive him home.

and finally make sure your in the right valley when the lifts stop.

I booked my trip solo to start off with (got company now) the flights were 170quid return including the bike and the hotel was 320quid which is cheaper than you'll pay in fuel and tolls especially if not car sharing. I'd only drive if car sharing with a few friends.
