[#385732]

Have agreed with a few mates from work to do this in June to raise a bit of money. Wondering if anyone here has done it and how they got on. I have a road bike asnd a mountain bike and am not sure which is most suitable for it as never ridden down there. Also what sort of time has it taken entrants to complete?]

Thanks in advance for any help/advcice

Matt

Do you mean the round the harbour cycle ride?

I've done the SCCC twice now. There's normally a few people that use road bikes. I'd estimate that it's around 70% road based. If it's wet, take your xc bike as parts of the ride are chalky. It's not technically challenging so see how you feel on the day.
If you're lucky with the ferrys and you don't stop in a pub you can do it in around 7-8 hours. Tell the missus 10 hours. Under promise - over deliver 😉

Thanks for that Grazzer, i was told that it is the stretch from Yarmouth to Freshwater that would cause the most grief on a road bike?

Yarmouth-Freshwater is a gravelly cycle path (disused railway line) with a few muddy patches. Fine on touring / robust skinny tyres, not so good for your best silk tubulars.

I've done it three times now and I agree with the above comments. The end Slog back to Lymington is the worst, but it's a great day out. Timing on the Ferries can be a pain so that really affects your total time.
