Finally replaced my aging lid with a nice giro xar - 2nd outing with it and I take a spill to avoid hitting the trees and put a nice scrape up the side of it! 🙁 still structurally sound but flippin irritating

If you weren't wearing it, you would have a nice scrape on your head. Which would probably heal given time.
Helmets don't heal themselves like your head does, be sensible peeps, leave the helmet at home !!
