I have had to change my route as despite complaining to the police, the same driver I meet each morning is getting a little bit bolder each day in his threat to "swat me into a wall" So I can avoid him but could do with something to film the other characters I encounter. Light and cheap and bar or helmet mounted please
If it were me and I was buying a camera with the intention of passing the footage to the police (or courts) as evidence I would certainly not cheap out & take the chance that the video is not helpful. Proper HD cameras (Contour HD, GoPro) are cheap enough these days when you consider what may be at stake (i.e. helping to get an idiot convicted/off the roads).
Unfortunately I'm still unconvinced if the police would take any action when presented with evidence of dangerous driving (that didn't result in a collision).
I've had a couple of cheap ones, IMO, they're not worth it. The quality isn't good enough to record number plates, and they don;t work if it's not broad daylight.
I've got a ContourHD (I got lucky and got it for around £100 from Amazon). The battery lasts longer, the quality is loads better, it's worth paying for if you want it to be useable.
You will need two cameras. You have to be able to ID the driver, not just the car, before the police take interest. Of course if the driver stops, gets out and hits you, one camera may suffice. Don't ask me how I know this.
A mate of mine used to commute via roadbike through London. One day he was knocked off his bike, he was fairly badly hurt, his bike was in pieces. Insurance and police couldn't do a thing as there was no proof. He asked if video proof would be sufficient, and they agreed it would
He now films all trips with a Contour I think. He uploads all poor driving to youtube, and has had some drivers contact him to take down the evidence as it shows their number plates! He checked site regulations and was ok to keep footage up.
He's had some success with forwarding awful driving to the police, and they'll go and breathe down someone's collar if they've been driving particularly badly.
