What oldgit means is that in a group those at the back have to push to keep up every time the group accelerates as there's a ripple effect down the line which always catches you out. So being at the back is easier at a steady pace but requires those at the back to push out of every corner, junction etc.

- Your bike won't turn to dust if you hit a pothole.
- Learn the signals and signal when safe.
- Don't do a "Ferrari".
- Swallow your pride if a young 'un drops you and ask for help.

Don't ride with a group of c*nts. I tried to join a group a few years ago after getting the roadie bug. They invited me out on a "short ride", which I accepted as my fitness was lacking. Ended up doing over 100 miles, with several horrible climbs. Then got abuse for not keeping up... ****s.

Ride smooth, no half-wheeling or racing off up hills.

The first two in my club are true but hills are fair game. If you want to attack one then do so, just wait at the top for the others to catch up. Oh and don't forget to sprint for the village signs. ๐Ÿ˜€

People seem to get hung up on the rules/ etiquette but they are not there to be a pain in the arse. They are there for the safety of your fellow riders. More so in the winter when the conditions are horrible.

Assert your alpha male status within the group by shoving a huge cucumber, Dereck Smalls style, down the front of your Lycra.

Whenever you stop, hurl your bike to the floor and stand, hands on hips, with your groin thrust forward like an over-eager porn actor, then fix every rider individually, in turn with a stare, then a cheeky wink.

Thanks for all the advice.

A very cold cock short of 50 miles. The group were a great bunch and happily shared knowledge with a relaxed and quick ride. Well - quick for me!

A standard club run then. All the clubs I've ridden with have been friendly, happy yo share advice and welcoming to newbies. Only way you'll get a bad reception is if you are a cocky twunt without the legs to back it up.

Best riders know you don't train on a general club ride* so if the pace is too slow you go to the front and make it easy for others or go to the back and push any stragglers up the hill.

What's half-wheeling?

Riding behind/to side with wheels half-overlapping. Dangerous.

Half wheeling is riding between a pair of riders in front of you. Really bloody annoying.

None of those is what I'd call half wheeling.
I've always known it to mean just keeping your wheel half a wheel ahead of the person next to you, so that they constantly feel obliged to catch up till they crack.

That's a long bike.

Half wheeling also refers to the habit of riding half a wheel in front on the person next to you. They tend to speed up to get level and you speed up some more to get another half wheel ahead. Results in the pace of the whole group gradually creeping up.

I always understood halfwheeling as having your front wheel kinda up with the person infront cassette rather than behind their rear wheel .. as if your about to overtake them, or urging them to go faster??

Instead of riding on the wheel, the half wheeler rides slightly to one side with his front wheel almost parallel to your rear wheel. It can be bloody dangerous.
Usually carried out by those that can't ride a wheel, but want some shelter.
That is half wheeling.

Yes, it a weekly ride covering 40-50 miles.

I'm aiming for a month of 100 miles a week then moving it up from there. I'm coming back from a forced two month lay off so I'm taking things relatively easy. Although I'm well in excess of my target already this week,

Happy days!

Half wheelers are incapable of riding at a steady pace to match their partner when on the front of the bunch. They continually push slightly harder, forcing the other rider to speed up to match them (or disrupting the group if the other rider doesn't keep up).

In our group its called this:

Normally the halfwheeler cracks first too. I have it done to me regullarly and being the fastest rider it just makes the halfwheeler look a bit daft.

I've always known it as this, caught myself doing it a bit yesterday, after racing 'cross all Autumn I'm a little out of practice with the group so need to sharpen up a bit. Agreed it is dangerous if the guy in front moves suddenly.

this is correct imo. For added impact do it up a slight incline whilst chatting to the one suffering, try and keep your responses brief!

Best dealt with by backing off so they end up riding on the front on their own.

Right, so no-one is sure what half-wheeling is, but you definitely shouldn't do it and people will get really pissed off if you do. Sound great these roady group rides! ๐Ÿ™‚

That's interesting isn't it. They all seem good uses of the term. I was brought up on the version of a rider half tailing you. Never had a name for that thing when people creep ahead other than annoying.
Usually carried out by a certain breed I refer to as the 'chubby legged cycling aficionados' new to the game and right ****ing know it alls.

That's similar to what I do. I used to be the same until it was pointed out to me. Now, when I hit the front I maintain the speed of the riders pulling off. We have one rider who accelerated quite hard and withing 30 seconds he's about 10/20 metres up the road.

My interpretation of half wheeling is the back wheel/ front wheel overlap. The accelerating I know to be a long bike and mainly done by people of a competitive nature.
