[#2622469]

Evening all,
So, switch my old cassette/chain to the missus' bike, 5 min job right? WRONG.
old 8spd sram cassette comes off, lock nut v lose, attempt to fit 'new' shimano 8spd one, lock nut won't engage. Ok, fine. But try and put the old one back on? Same issue. WTF?!? I've punched, kicked, wiggled, compared swore till I'm blue and finally given up and started drinking.
I know what I'm doing, in that I switched cassettes on my bike just 10 mins before this debacle, again, new 8spd SRAM replacing the aforementioned shimano.
Any ideas? It almost feels like the old hub is 7 spd, but how was the old cassette on there before?!?

Too much rage. Going out for a calipo.
Any ideas? Please?

take 8 speed cassette off and see if lock nut will thread in with no cassette in place? At least you'll know if the thread in the freehub is knackered.

Tried all of the above, both lock nuts thread onto freewheel ok, have tried swapping the smallest cogs about to make sure no mix up...
Only thing that could provide a clue is that the hub has an old style bolt up axle (it's a rubbish old bike). Did have to remove the axle to get the cassette lock nut tool in there, can't understand how this would change things?

Oh, drinking Purity Ubu (pretty good) and Brewdog 5am Saint (awesome!)
Thanks guys!

does sound like it's a very old hub and maybe not happy that's too narrow for 8 speed cassette - I'd measure both to see?

Cassettes both the same size. Haven't measured another freewheel, but then an 8spd cassette came off?!?
This is driving me loopy...
