Turns out it is bloody good fun. MTB braking control on a super fast drop-barred bike. Win/win scenario. Did take a while to get used to the power... easy to lock up the rear, although didn't take long to adjust.

Thanks to Garage Bikes in Morley for helping me out with the build. It's a Kinesis Pro6, Shimano CX70/Ultegra/105 mix, Hope Pro2s with Crests tubelessed.

Other observations - new XT "race" pedals are great... extra platform vs older XTs is really noticeable.

Looking forward to first 'cross race on it on Sunday, then 3 Peaks at end of the month.

Nice. Would you mind sharing with me how much that set up cost? I'm considering something similar just need to work out if it's affordable now or later!

If you don't want to say on here my e-mail is in profile.

Sefton - training?? Oops. Nah, it's going ok thanks. Bit of a setback on the weekend when I rolled my ankle in a fell race, but seems to be no lasting damage.

YoKaiser - thanks boss.

Hammerite - I was lucky enough to get lots of parts at trade, and the wheels are second hand, but I reckon £2000 if you paid full price for everything. £1600 if you hammered the usual websites?

What tyres are you using on there & how easy were they to get onto those rims? Have had some "issues" with skinny tyres & Stans mtb rims in the past.

Pedalhead - alright Mark, its @24tom from twitter here. Really should change my name on the forum :-/ They are Schwalbe RaRas... 35mm. Until about 10 mins ago, I'd have said no problems whatsoever. But... the rear was losing a bit of air, so popped a little more stans in and reinflated. BOOM. Latex bukkake. Now partially deaf.

Hammerite... the frame is £500ish... so plenty of opportunity to spec it how you want. Go Tiagra/105 mix and some cheaper wheels, and bet you could bring it in at a smidge over £1000.

Aidy,.. sorry mate. Not a clue! Light enough to feel light. Not so light I thought "bloody hell that's light"...

welcome to the crosslight club!! loving mine too, although just stuck some SKS chromoplastic guards on or winter commuting duties which spoils the look a bit. Also now with Thomson post as I didnt like the layback

Built mine up at the weekend. Haven't had a chance to ride it properly other than on the back lane.

Second hand ebay ultegra group, bb7, ebay frame, wheels from JRA and finishing kit from around the place. About £1200

terrahawk, when you cut the spare furlong of rear mech outer cable off, change them all for a black outers along with the bar tape, then it will be bob on 😉

Oh hi Tom 😀 . I'm getting a CX bike on Cycle 2 Work thingy over the winter & would really like to put Crests on it (so they can also be used on my 29er), but I've had terrible trouble getting 32s onto Arch rims in the past. Notwithstanding the BOOM/spaff incident (oops!), are the 35mm Ralphs easy enough to get on & off the Crest rims? I had to cut a Panaracer Pasela off my Arch rim a couple of years back!

No probs at all Mark. Using the yellow tape, and was able to pop the tyres on with no difficulty, without them feeling baggy.

I've got a Genesis Vapour.....mostly for the commute for which its tremendous but I'd like to get it lighter and maybe have a race on it.

Frame and Fork
Frame 6061 Aluminium
Fork Carbon
Headset 1-1/8 Threadless
Colour Blood Orange

Transmission
Shifters Shimano Tiagra 10spd STi
Rear Derailleur Shimano Tiagra 10spd
Front Derailleur Shimano FD-CX70 Cyclocross
Chainset Shimano FC-CX50 Cyclocross 46/36
Bottom Bracket Hollowtech
Chain Shimano Tiagra 10spd
Freewheel Shimano Tiagra 10spd 12-28
Wheels
Hubs Shimano M475
Rims Alex XD-Lite
Spokes Stainless Black
Tyres Continental Cyclocross Race

Brakes
Brakes Avid BB-7
Brake Levers Shimano Tiagra Sti

Contact Zone
Handlebars Genesis 6061 Alloy Drop
Stem Genesis Alloy
Grips Microfibre Tape
Saddle Genesis Road CrMo Rail
Seat Post Genesis 6061 27.2mm
Pedals Shimano PDM-520

I guess there's a fair bit on there I could work on to get the weight down but Captain tell me about wheels. Are your Hope/Crests regular 29er size? Have a 29er hardtail and would like to have a spare set around the place or on my CX bike. That what you've got?

McBoo, they are indeed 29er wheels. Think most disc cross frames come with MTB spacing, so makes swapping easy. I'll be using my Shimano XT wheels as spares for 3PCX.

My rims are tubeless ready apparently (A23 new ones). Not tried them yet. Dead easy to get the tyres on. No levers. I was put off the Crests by the tyres fitting horror stories.

Got my wheels built by just riding along. Smidge over £300 for Hope Pro 2 evo hubs, sapim race spokes and tubeless A23 rims. Real weight - QR was about 1900g the pair. 1050 rear, 850 front. Bit heavier than I would have liked but I don't just race on the bike so weight weenie stuff was out.

None of my stems are slammed - I like my bikes to fit but can't afford a custom frame each time. In cross it makes very little difference - control on technical stuff and position when climbing are more important.

have a dirty disco andits ace. Toying with putting either my x7 26-39 chain set on or a new x5 28-42, use the bike for comuting a bit of cx racing the 3 peaks later this month and some training in the north lakes. My thinking being 39 or 42 will be fine for racing but the smaller front will be good for 3 peaks. I thinki'm erringon 28-42 so as not to loose too much on the road and spin out

Thinking about a MTB cassette and mech for 3 Peaks. Might end up being too lazy to sort it, then curse the entire way round...

Nice bike Tom. I've had a disc cross bike since about 2003 but prefer my new one.

Some nice tubular wheels (A2Z / BOR / CX-Ray) will be going on for racing, not in time for Sunday's first race though)

Definitely on a look out for a frame and fork to do a build, but just wondered if any body has tried the new Hope breaks on their cx instead of the BB7's?
And Captain!
Very nice bike! What size is it?

Any one ridden both a DirtyDisco and a Crosslight? Looking at get either as a road/cross bike used for club rides and I'll commute on it, may be try a cross race. Is the DD worth the extra brass being a lighter carbon frame or will the Crosslight be more durable as it Ali and the weight penalty not be too noticeable?

Thank you 🙂 It's a 57cm. I'm 6ft, and it's a perfect fit (saddle slightly lower than in that photo)
