Broke me steerer on the crosser today and started to muse about the contributing factors.
I wonder what difference it being 1" rather than 1"1/8 made?
The front end suffered from really bad brake judder. I wonder if this plus the above, plus aluminium steerer made any odds?
My basic knowledge of materials science says the answer to both of these is a kind of qualified yes but I'm happy to be corrected.

I doubt that the 1" size had much significance in itself. In theory it should have been thicker to end with the same stiffness.
Brake judder could have affected it though - more cycles and probably higher repetitive load
Where did it snap?
Overtightened stem? Or at the bottom bearing race? Or somewhere else?
About 20mm above the crown race. I've got a pic but can't post it from this machine.
How much use has it had? I imagine being 1", that its had some fair old hammer over a good few years?

The fork is probably about 7 years old and it's had a proper hammering in that time. It doesn't owe me anything.
7 years of brake juddering - most likely a simple fatigue fail.
