Is it just me or do other people snap them?
I have a 12mm bolt through on the back of a bike and this is the second one to have snapped.
No problem because cheap and easy to replace. Am I just too strong for the limits of current technology (or too fat) or do other people snap them as well.
Interestingly the 12mm axle on which it sits remains intact.
Funny you should say that. Broke mine tonight. There's an old thread on here about it somewhere

Far from alone, the old Pro 2 12mm axle isn't strong enough for the job, even with a full-thickness maxle to support it. Not thick enough.
There's a fix, but it's not cheap- Hope redesigned the hub internals (Pro 2 Evo) and it's all retrofittable but you need to replace the freehub body, axle and bearings I'm told.
Thanks
Much appreciated, although what I do now I don't know.
Northwind solution sounds like a new wheel because the current Mavic rim is a bit split and doesn't run tubeless.
£13.99 on a new axle/spindle for the time being while I think about it.
FWIW Hope replaced mine no questions asked so worth checking in with them before you fork out.
Nacked mine last week LBS said 150 quid to replace and there is no way I ride it that hard. It is on an orange 5 with maxle and only 18 months old
Why £150 to fix when axle replacement is £15 ish or was that for the retrofit north wind was talking about?
A complete Pro 2 Evo rear hub can be bought for £105 so not sure where £150 comes from. Should be a warranty job regardless, surely?
That's what I thought
Just called into my lbs to see if they had a replacement axle and they said they'd replace it foc and upgrade the rock shox axle foc too. Not bad considering I bought the bike over 2 years ago.
That's good service then....nice to hear.
It`s a red anodised one, they said Hope could press some new bearings in but it would tarnish the finish. I will be on to them tomorrow about warranty, cheers for the info.
Sounds like your lbs are at it. Utter drivel.
Yup. The hubs aren't disposable! What's the actual problem?
There i a video on the hope tech website which goes through replacing the axle etc YMWN you should take a look so you know if you LBS it talking crap or not.
The only point a Pro 2 hub becomes un servicable is if the hub flanges are damaged, hope can swap out the ratchet ring inside the hub and all other parts are available to buy.
I sent 3 snapped 12mm pro 2 axles back to hope last week and they were all replaced FOC.

Sounds like you need a new LBS. Just had my 2yr old Pro 2 replaced with a steel axle, new bearings & freehub FOC by Hope.

as well as replacing your hub axle free of charge your LBS should also swap your Maxle for the newer version free of charge too. They will send it off to Fishers. (assuming you have the older Maxle version)
Hope are very good at replacing things because they get alot of practise.
One of our bunch has broken so many that Hope actually made a steel one for him as a special. Now that's customer service!

Classic Hope- sell someone an unsuitable part, and get credit for fixing it when it breaks. Good customer service would have been making the hub work right, or not selling it when they knew how likely it is to break.
The did eventually redesign the hub to be fit for purpose. Do they offer to upgrade existing customers? Nope. They did offer to sell me the parts, at RRP, without even a discount for the cost of the broken part- cheers but no!
I snapped two in a very short space of time (both replaced free by Hope) when I was using the original Maxle Light (the one that tapered in the middle). Since replacing with an original Maxle, which does not taper in the middle, I've been problem free.
Ooooh... that thread at the top is my old thread from two years ago about this.
Update from that is I kept snapping the Hope Pro2 axles roughly every 2-3 months for the rest of the year despite running the BETD bolt out back.
I spoke to Hope a few times that year and eventually spoke to a chap called Dave who agree'd to upgrade it to a Pro2 EVO for me... for which I sent Dave and the warranty department a box of Jaffa Cakes 😆
Since getting the EVO upgrade I have had no more issues in over a year (and I bought another set of Pro 2 Evo wheels for my other bike)... I'm still very much a fan of Hope and their customer service 8)
