Snapped a nipple this morning. Never seen that before. It went right at the point where it mushroomed out.

Anyone else done that or am I special?

Alloy - fairly common, from what I've seen.

Brass - usually only on a badly out of tension or damaged wheel, ime.

Was a brass nipple. I popped a new one in and re-tensioned it.

You now have me worried the wheel is going to implode with much dying of the rider ensuing. I guess I will be taking it easy and carrying out regular checks tomorrow.

I'd check the rest of the spoke tensions to make sure they're even but I wouldn;t worry too much 🙂

May be caused by the spokes being a little too short. Have a look under the rim tape if you can, the spoke ends should come up at least as high as the driver slots in the head.

I've had a couple of alloy nipples go like that but there was no ball of fire/death involved if it puts your mind at rest a little.  Just a bit of an out of true wheel to sort.

I had loads snapping on a wheel once, but they were pretty old. Maybe 8 or 9 years?

2 year old bike and according to Strava 3500 kilometres ridden. They are the OEM wheels and the nipple had gone in the front one.

Another one has gone in exactly the same way. However, Mr supposed to be an engineer can't tell the difference between brass and aluminium it seems.

Less worried now and looking at at new wheels so every cloud and all that.

It wouldn't be a Specialized wheel by any chance?

Stick with it Uphill 😀 (if you copy the user name line is goes a bit... zany)

Specialized were known to use alloy nips with a 2 year lifespan. All mine went around the same time - taking many spoke too, as did several of my Roval riding buddies. Buy new wheels if you wish but I had the wheels rebuilt with non alloy nipples. Still running strong and much cheaper

I've had 5 or 6 alloy ones go on a Kinesis wheel I bought second-hand off here. No impact damage on the rim, so concluded that they've been over-tightened at some point. Just had it rebuilt with brass nipples instead.
