[#4582915]

So after on the weekend snapping the axle on my Atlas cranks, I was thinking of replacing them with some of the new XT doubles. However I have a few doubts.

1. Will they be strong enough? As I managed to snap the axle off my Atlas's just before the splines on the driveside
2. Do I still need a chainguide with this double chainset (I currently have a blackspire stinger)
3. Will this 10 speed chainset work when the rest of the setup is entirely 9 speed?

What do people think?

Shimano has the axle crimped in the drive side, passing the splined joint to the other side, which is a better solution for most right-handed (stronger on the right) people.

Consider Saint cranks with a heavier axle and longer BB cups for extra strength.
Edit: Saint and Zee now only available as a single ring solution, so may not be appropriate. Earlier Saint was available a single, double and triple.

XT every time.

I speak as an ex-RaceFace customer. If in doubt, seek out some of the run out SLX double and bash cranks, which have a reinforced axle and pedal interface.

Yes, a ten speed chainset works with a nine speed setup - my own XT is ten speed and all has been fine.

Definitely want a double, so will order the XT's.

The cranks were 3 years old and had done a couple of Alps holidays and I am not sure if they get more stress when being on a hardtail as I've never broken a set like that, as the driveside flew off when it sheared off.

I changed from Race Face (only Evolve XC) to XT 2 x 10 and noticed a significant increase in strength/stiffness. And the BB is soo much better.
